My car stalls/ sputters at times, especially when the engine is running warmer than usual- what is wrong?
It is a 1996 Pontiac Firebird, with the 3.8 V6 motor. I just had it tuned up. It sat for about two or three months. Could the stalling/sputtering be caused by debris in the fuel lines?
It especially likes to sputter when sitting in traffic- and when the engine gets hot.
The check engine light comes on sometimes. The car has apx. 135K miles on it.
The sputtering is annoying- but the engine doesn't shut off altogether. It just stalls a little. The rpm goes down a couple of hundred rpm each time it 'stalls', and it slows down the car when accelerating.
Anyone know what could be causing this?
There is a idler switch that is connected to the AC clutch it is supposed to give the engine more fuel when the AC kicks on. Sometimes they go out and would cause your problem. It could also be the fuel filter. If the car sat for a while moisture could have built up in the gas tank and if you put gasoline with ethanol in it the water will mix with the ethanol and cause a little sputtering until you get all of the water out of the tank. Keep using gas with ethanol in it and it will get the water out. You might want to change the fuel filter also but check the idle proble with the AC off and see if it still does it. If it doesn't then the switch that idles the engine higher is out.
