Home Solar Power Systems - Are They For You?
Home Solar Power Systems And Their Benefits
Home solar power systems can be very expensive. They require you to ensure you need a considerable amount of money before purchasing enough to make a difference to your entire home. But what about just enough for a couple of appliances? Renewable energy has the benefit of being infinite and you're never under the thumb of a big corporation and energy provider. And while they offer renewable energy, it can be rather expensive in some places and inapplicable in others. Purchasing our own panels means it's a one-time payment and over twenty-years of usage. No doubt, it'd pay itself back over time. Additionally, not only are you preserving the environment by reducing your carbon footprint, but if you happen to live in a zone where power-outs are common or even occasional, the solar panel can have powered some deep cycle batteries ready for such an event. You can power lights for up to ten hours with a medium-sized panel, meaning you don't have to be left out in the dark.
Turning Sunlight Into Usable Electricity
Solar panels contain solar cells, which are made up from a semi-conductor material, such as silicon. When the photons in the sunlight is absorbed into these materials, the photons bounce of the negatively charged electrons, causing them to flow through the material to generate electricity. This electricity only flows in one direction due to the design of the solar cells and this electricity is a usable direct current feed.
One of the main issues is with how large the panel needs to be before it's productive. Really, it depends on what you wish to use it for. Solar panels are brilliant for charging up car batteries and other deep cycle batteries, providing the panel routs energy at 12 volts or more. In some cases, the panel could even power an appliance directly. However, the size of the panel determines exactly how fast this charging process is.
As for measurements of how useful a solar panel might be to you; a 60w solar panel has the capacity to charge a 50Ah battery in around three and a half days. 60w solar panels are considered small and for personal use rather than for powering large appliances like our widescreen TVs. However, if you had enough patience, even a 60w panel could charge a large capacity battery enough to power such things. Larger panels, such as 120w ones can obviously charge batteries quicker and maybe even directly power appliances with the right equipment installed.
So imagine with a 120w solar panel, you could do it in half the time, charging more batteries and allowing you to effectively charge many appliances in your home, especially larger ones. Furthermore, in some countries, governments sponsor such renewable energy sources, where the citizens are taking the initiative. In the long-term, you become less dependent on fossil fuels and electric companies as a result.
As you can see, once you gain a large solar panel, the potential applications rise dramatically. You go from having almost no use for it to being able to apply to hundreds of electronics around the home. If you can afford the initial cost, the eventual savings will help you save tenfold.

Can a .55 volt solar cell charge 2 rechargable AA bateries?
And if so how long and how efficient would this be please be spicific.
It won't even charge one. The charging voltage must be higher than the battery voltage.
