State Of Bahia, Brazil
Salvador da Bahia (people known as Bahia), a municipality of 2.2 million sited on the norhteast coast (in the state of Bahia, Brazil), is respected by all people of Brazil as their center for spiritual activity. Catholics from all over Brazil make pilgrimages to Bonfim to ask for miracles. Bahia is also the birthplace of the Afro-Brazilian religion candomble, a Yoruba faith similar to Haiti’s voodoo and Cuba’s Santeria. Like other cities where African spirits have migrated –Havana, Port-Au-Prince, New Orleans—Bahia spread out with nice cooking, nice and great music, and a exciting arts scene.
The city’s widely-known attraction, though, is Carnival. Beginning in January, Bahia opens into a time of parties that, during six weeks, escalates into a rocking, incredible street party. Those who know claim that it’s more thrilling than Rio’s –that is known as the best in the world.
For decades Bahia has been almost a secret city, beloved by Brazilians and pored over by cultural anthropologists, but little-known to outsiders. In the latest years, however, the city has emerged itself from obscurity because of international exposure from projects like Paul Simon’s best-selling album and David Byrne’s documentary about candomble. African-American visitors interested in seeing more their cultural heritage have also started to venture to Bahia. The surge in recognition couldn’t be coming at a more propitious time: Bahia is in the midst of a civic renaissance.
About 5 years ago, the major part of the multimillion dollar renovation of the colonial Pelourinho, was officially completed. This development restored the oldest and probably the most magnificent location of colonial architecture in the world: Grand Plazas.
Bahia, like the other northeast coast areas, has acceptable temperatures all year round. They rarely dip below 25C (77F) and there are very few days hotter than 32 or 33C (90F). Winter temperatures are just 3-4C degrees below the summer temperatures (since it is not cold, you won't be able to find any house or accomodation in Bahia which has a portable heater like Kozy World KWN321, natural-gas heater).
As a city with perfect tourist infrastructure, Bahia has a wide-range of accomodations, so visitor can easily find any class of hotel they needed. From a cabin until a 5 star hotel with state-of-the-art fitness equipment like ProForm Trailrunner 4.0 can be found in Bahia. Bear in mind that Bahia is also a pedestrian-friendly city. Even when you stroll-away with a big carrier like Samsonite Xspace, you can find your way easily.
