My BlackBerry Curve 8310 is currently on silent and it flashes a red LED light, located at the front of my phone at the top right corner, whenever I receive a new message. However, there have been a few times that the LED light won't notify me if I have a new message waiting, even though my settings are correct. I guess it's just a minor glich. But to answer your question, yes, it is possible to have your BlackBerry on silent and still have the option to be notified of incoming messages or not. If your light is not flashing, check your settings and adjust your profiles to designate if you want to be notified or not.
