Add Instant Appeal To Your Yard With A Pond
For an instant focal point to your rear garden, think about building a pond. For example Ontario residents that own Ajax real estate may get in touch with the local utilities such as Enbridge or Ontario Hyro. What better method to de-stress than sitting next to a water feature and listening to water. Here are a few suggestions to help you create a perfect water feature that will become the landmark of your garden.
The first step you should do is to contact your municipality to make sure that there are no gas or electric lines running underneath the spot you have selected for your pond. Try to stay away of older trees that will have significant root systems. Choose a location that will be visible from most of the backyard for everyone’s pleasure. For a more intimate refuge, tuck away your pond in a hidden area and landscape it profusely.
Contour the size and shape of your pond with a string. Shapes are limited when choosing a pre-formed pond. When using a liner you can let your imagination run wild. When you start digging, keep in mind the plateau for the plant terrace which will be about eight inches down and one foot wide for liners or commanded by the size of your pre-formed pond. Now would be a great time to verify that the pond’s edges are level. If your power source is not close to the pond, you should dig a shallow trench in which you will bury the PVC pipe that will hold the electric cord.
Line the base of the pond with one inch of sand. The terraced steps should also be covered by sand. If using a pre-formed pond, place it in the pit. If working with a liner, begin laying it down. Cutting four feet longer and wider than the actual pond will aid. Push the liner down and flatten out any folds.
Now is a great time to add water to the pond. With a pre-formed liner, you need to begin backfilling the space around the pond and time it so that you are finished at about the same time the pond is filled. When using a liner, constantly pull the liner taunt all around. If you are using a pump to operate a fountain or waterfall, install it at the bottom of the pond and hide the cord.
Now begins the fun part - dressing up your pond. Start by laying down flat rocks on the border of your pond and offset a second layer for a realistic look. Hang over the rocks a bit over the water. Conceal your water pump cord in between rocks and place a third rock on top being careful not to compress the hose.
Take your time when devising how you will plant around your pond. Decide if you want your pond to be easily visible or should it become one with the rest of your backyard? To make your pond accessible, ensure you maintain at least once side bare. Designing a feature on one side and one end while leaving the rest of the pond clear is a popular landscaping option. When choosing plants, remember to choose ones that will do well in a moist environment. In and around an Ajax homes in Ontario will often have differences in temperature with tough winters and hot, scorching summers so take your region’s climate into account.
You may now sit back and enjoy the fruits of your hard work. In most cases, ponds can be one weekend projects. So go ahead. Everyone will desire a pond when they see how great yours looks.
I want to install a solar powered pond pump or fountain. Any recommendations?
It's for a small ornamental pond, with fish and plants, and variable amounts of sunshine
My recommendation is don't. In my experience, the solar ones simply don't have enough power to really make a "splash". And the batteries eventually cease to charge as well during the day.
