Solar Power Systems Make Your Home Eco-Friendly

More and more people these days are installing solar panels or modules onto their rooftops. These solar panels or modules consist of several photovoltaic (PV) cells which are arranged in series and mounted onto a board. Photovoltaics, as the term implies, convert light (photo) energy into electricity (voltaic). PV cells are made of semiconductor material which contains silicon and some other elements like boron or phosphorus. As photons from sunlight strike the solar cell’s surface, a portion of it is absorbed and causes the release of electrons. Since most appliances require alternating current, you will still need an inverter to transform the resultant direct current from the modules.

One criticism of solar energy though is its variability. Shade and snow will expectedly cause decreased power output from the modules. This variability has been addressed with the integration of deep-cycle batteries as well as grid-tied systems.

The price tag on premade solar panels is probably the reason why homeowners are reluctant to have one installed. Store-bought solar panels can cost around $900 a piece which translates to $25,000 – 50,000 for medium to large homes. Some people find this too costly, others simply turn a blind eye on the startup cost and look to the long-term savings and earnings they can get from the system.

One of the advantages of using solar energy is that you can save a lot of money in the long run. In some countries, owners of grid-tied systems can even earn incentives from the government or from the energy company through net metering programs. Not only are you saving money but you are taking an active role in reducing our dependence to power sourced from fossil fuels which for a fact has contributed to global warming and climate change.

You can bring capital cost down by getting a DIY solar panel kit. Cost for home made solar panels can be as little as $200 Materials and plans solar panel can be found online. Those who are familiar with power tools and circuitry can build their own homemade solar panel systems in a day. If you aren’t as confident, there are available DIY packages online which contain plans for solar panels as well as video walkthroughs.

How many solar panels?

I want to buy some factory made solar panels to charge 12 volt batteries. I then want to connect batteries to a DC to AC inverter. How many solar panels do I need to charge 6 (12 volt) marine batteries connected in parallel to run a 1,500 watt inverter. I will be powering a 1/2 hp motor, a refrigerator a couple of light bulbs.

Go to Real Goods and find their worksheet. Need to figure the refrigerator will run almost constantly, the motor run time, and how many watts for the lights. Now figure for inefficiencies.
OK, all that said, I have 1750 watts of PV at 24 volts, 20 6-volt golf cart batteries, and a 2400 watt inverter. I have a propane refrigerator, and an electric chest freezer. I have enough battery for about 3 days, and enough PV to run dishwasher, washer, gas dryer, but not all at once.
