Home Energy Savings for Less

A everyday American home would spend about $2000 a year on electrical bills alone. That would compare to over $160 a month. But were you aware a large portion of the energy is wasted than used? And if we are able to only sum up all of the wastes of each American household and divert this someplace else, we can power the remainder of the world living in darkness. Sadly , we could not. We can't convert this wasted energy in more handy ways. But this doesn't mean that we can't do something about it. We are able to start to make changes right at our terribly home.

Without spending too much before you can save, you can convert your house into an energy efficient environment. Here is how :

1. Correct and leaks and damages all over your place

During winter, your place must be secured and sealed. In this fashion, the cold air outside wouldn't enter your house that would give your heating system a difficult time warming up the house. Ensure the doorframes, windows, sills, and joints would not let the cold air enter the house. Sealants can simply do the job. For portions of the house with moving parts contacting to the non-moving parts like garage doors, exterior doors, operable windows, and door of attic, weatherstrippings act as a good sealant. Weatherstripper is a rubber material that seals the conveyable object from its non-moveable object. Weatherstripper can mostly be seen on cars between the doors and the doorframes.

2. Use plastic window covers

To efficiently block the heat from going out of your house, you can use plastic window covers. This would effectively reduce the energy cost since your heating system would not be forced to replace the heat lost. This is one inexpensive and smart way to start your home energy saver.

3. Remove all the door gaps

Door openings typically happen when the wood used for your door shrinks thanks to the temperature change or if the doors aren't correctly installed. If this occurs, ensure you seal and remove these door openings. As was discussed above, leaks could cause further work on your heating system that in turn, cost a lot of cash. Ensure you keep your doors sealed and tight.

4. Replace your incandescent bulbs with fluorescent lights.

You will save as much as $40 on electrical bills over the term of the fluorescent light. And since it lasts eight to 10 times more than the regular incandescent, you spare yourself in spending eight to 10 times on replacing bulbs.

5. Replace your usual overhead shower with low-flow showerheads.

It may not sound as a pretty good idea especially if you are the type of person who loves to take a shower every now and then. But low-flow showerheads will work efficiently and would yield to better energy use. Not only it will contribute on your energy conservation, the shower experience would not be very bad at all. Doing so would let you save about $50 every year.

6. Keep the volume of your electric devices at the moderate level.

Sure, many people would like their TVs or their stereos to be as loud as their ears can endure. as the speakers get louder, more energy is consumed. If you have the desire for loud music, employing a headphone is a smart idea.

7. Buy energy efficient appliance.

When you shop, you may want to see EnerGuide labels first. The EnerGuide states how much energy the appliance consumes. You can see it on most appliances for sale. Knowing this would give you better electricity savings would yield to long-term energy saving effect.

8. Keep the walls sealed.

You would not only concentrate on your windows, doors, sills, on joints, you should also consider sealing the walls. Any cracks have a tendency to grow larger and larger. Make sure that your walls are sealed so that the air from the outside would not enter.

9. Use laptops instead of desktops.

Believe it or not, desktops consume ten times more energy than PCs. So when possible or if you've got the choice between the 2 you can like the more energy efficient one. A last thing : there are printers and facsimile machines with power management feature, like purchasing them.

A question for sparkies...?

How do I get rid of a Lutron GRAFIKEye lighting panel?

It's basically a bunch of dimmers with different zones and modes, and little timers on it so that lights go on or off slowly when you select a different mode.

It was used when our office was a shop. It controls some 240V spots and some LV spots as well.

Question is, if I pull it off the wall, will I find a mess of electronic spaghetti behind it extending way into the walls, or is it really just a glorified dimmer switch that I can replace with a bunch of boring old switches?

Reason for wanting rid of it: energy saver bulbs can't use dimmers, and you can't bypass the dimmers on this thing.

Edinburgh, since you ask.

Thanks!!

Depending on the number of zones there will be at least one cable for each plus a supply, could be wired various ways. The biggest problem will be the box size which is a US twin switchbox, you can't normally fit UK switches to these, but there are ways of adapting them or else removing and replacing with a uk type.

Please YMail me, I have a suggestion. I tried emailing you but your address is 'Not confirmed' so it bounced!!
