Why I Came West

Nature has always played a large role in the acclaimed short fiction of Rick Bass, and he addresses his love of the wild, and his particular brand of environmentalism, directly in WHY I CAME WEST. Originally a Southerner, Bass fell in love with mountain forests of the Rocky Mountains, and though he would rather have stayed involved solely in the world of art and literature, he felt compelled to become an activist as he saw the devastation of his beloved forests at corporate hands. No bleeding-heart liberal, Bass advocates hunting as a natural process of the wilderness, and he writes with a kind of macho eloquence about the beauty of nature, and the necessity to keep it safe and pure.
